Bush Vetch

Vicia sepium

Pretty two-tone bluish-mauve pea-like flowers in short stalked clusters right through from May until November provide an extremely long season of interest and are followed by black seed pods. This long flowering period and its delicate, pinnate leaves and curling tendrils, make this a must-have for any meadow.

A scrambling or trailing perennial of hedges, woodland margins and rough grassland, this is an excellent plant for a sunny or slightly shaded wildflower meadow where it will use the grasses to support itself.

As with all plants in the pea family, Bush Vetch is nitrogen-fixing and will improve the soil for surrounding plants and future crops.

Loved by bumble bees.
