Common Knapweed

Centaurea nigra

Also called Black Knapweed, the tightly packed reddish-pink flower heads on erect stalks have the appearance of soft thistles with their distinctive fringed dark brown, knobbly bracts behind the flowers.

Flowers are one and a half ins across and appear from Jun - Sep.

Happy in dry or damp conditions and though they are a fantastic shot of colour in a wildflower meadow, don't feel you have to limit its use, it also looks great in the border!
