Meadow Clary

Salvia pratensis, Wild sage

Classified as Near Threatened and currently under protection in the UK, this woody-stemmed perennial produces spikes of deep, violet-blue lipped flowers from summer right through until autumn.

Perfect in the border and fabulous as a splash of drama when naturalised in grass.

Forms an upright clump 3ft tall by 2ft wide.

The wrinkled leaves of this plant are pleasantly aromatic when crushed.

Deadhead to encourage a second flush of flowers.

Loved by butterflies.

Happy in any moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.

Historically, aside from its medicinal properties, it was used to flavour beer and wines.
