Old Man's Beard

Clematis vitalba

Also known as Traveller's Joy, a pretty and vigorous climber with almond-scented greeny-white flowers from July- August.

The flowers are followed by large, fluffy white seedheads that cover the plant in Autumn and give this plant its characteristic common name.

An important wildlife plant as it provides food and shelter for many species of bird including Goldfinch and Greenfinch. The scented flowers are an excellent food source for night-flying moths as well as bees and hoverflies.

Extremely easy to grow but dislikes very acid soils.
