Sweet Woodruff

Galium odoratum

Masses of tiny white star-like flowers above whorls of shiny, lush green leaves carpet the ground from April- June on this pretty woodland plant.

Leaves smell of vanilla when crushed and are sweetly hay-scented when dried. Was used as an ancient strewing herb on floors of chapels to sweeten the air and also to stuff mattresses. Try putting some in the airing cupboard to make all your laundry smell meadow-fresh!

Prefers good drainage but, equally happy against a north-facing wall, deep under the canopy of trees or in an open, sunny position. Makes an excellent groundcover plant.

A perfect plant for deep dry shade where nothing else will grow.
