Wild Columbine

Aquilegia vulgaris

The woodland version of the cottage garden favourite.

Lacey foliage is grey/blue green and very decorative, sending up startling violet-blue nodding flowers with a distinctive hooked spur, on tall spikes from May to July.

Unlike its cultivated cousins, the Wild Columbine is extremely drought tolerant and would prefer a well-drained spot in the garden. So pretty when naturalised under trees with red campions but, equally earns a place in any border for its brilliant blue flowers and real hardiness.

A great plant for shade.
